Webinar: Mumps in U.S. Detention Facilities

August 28 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

NACCHO supports local health departments that are on the front lines of public health providing vaccination, responsible for disease surveillance, and prevention and control activities to reduce health risks of cases and outbreaks.

Since September 2018, there have been over 800 mumps cases in adult migrants detained in US detention facilities, who are under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Detention facilities should follow local or state health department guidance and recommendations for mumps outbreak management. Effective public health interventions in this setting require understanding of facility and custody operations, which often involve frequent transfers of detainees and multiple entities with authority for operations and detainee custody. For this, it is important for health departments and the facility to work together to develop appropriate interventions based on the local epidemiology and the specific needs of each facility.

This webinar will provide an overview from CDC and ICE regarding mumps cases and provide guidance to help health departments to respond more efficiently and help to stop outbreaks sooner. Participants will also learn about CDC and ICE Health Service Corps (IHSC) resources and receive guidance on frequently answered questions. By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the current landscape regarding mumps outbreaks in U.S. detention facilities
  2. Improve their understanding of the complex operations for managing custody of people in ICE custody
  3. Describe differences in the role of different local, state, and federal partners when responding to outbreaks in detention facilities.
  4. Identify key principles for communicating with detention facilities
  5. Gain a better understanding of CDC guidance and resources available to assist with responding to mumps in detention facilities
