BARDA Broad Spectrum Antimicrobials Program

The Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) has posted a new blog update about the BARDA Broad Spectrum Antimicrobials Program, a program established in April 2010 to develop novel antibacterial and antiviral drugs to treat or prevent diseases caused by biological threats. BARDA is taking a unique partnership approach to engage industry in antibiotic development in an effort to combat the rise in antibiotic resistance. ASPR and BARDA leadership have recognized that new antibiotics are needed immediately to address the increasingly prevalent public health threat of antibiotic resistance, as well as the likelihood that antibiotic resistance will complicate the response to a public health emergency.
